This week, my friend, coworker, blog editor, and 2nd grade teacher, Kate Buesching talked with me about changing technology over the past 20 years. We discussed the concept of Thomas Friedman’s book “The World is Flat” (2005) as referenced in O’Neal’s article “What does ‘the world is flat’ mean for education? A closer look at our educational globe” (2006). While we generally agreed, we also considered that not all places have the same access to technology, so maybe the “playing field” isn’t as flat as it was believed. This conversation lead us into some positives of technology, but mostly how the development and implementation of AI, as well as constant screen time use, is hindering student’s abilities to learn for themselves.
